Dominican Republic
Along with beautiful natural formations, this marvelous cave is filled with hundreds of paintings made by the island’s indigenous inhabitants.
Looking at just the natural formations, the Cave of Wonders is already a standout attraction. The 800-meter-long cavern is filled with stalactites and stalagmites, stone columns, and fossilized coral formations and animals, all of which is easily accessible and beautifully illuminated. But what makes the Cueva de las Maravillas (literally “Cave of Wonders”) truly wonderful are the nearly 500 paintings and engravings depicting everything from abstract designs to people with animals, made by the native Taíno Indians hundreds of years ago.
