Cave of Zeus

Explore this stunning cave where Zeus himself is said to have been born.

About

The Diktaeaen Cave (also known as the Cave of Psychro) is one of the most significant sites in Greece – it is allegedly the birthplace of Zeus himself! According to the myth, it was the place where the king of the gods was hidden from his cruel father, Cronos. The area surrounding the cave is quite windy since it is located over three thousand feet above sea level, so enjoy the stunning views and serpentine roads before you get in. Once you arrive, still need to follow a steep path up to the cave entrance, although it’s also possible to rent a donkey to make the journey a bit easier. Inside the cave, each chamber has impressive stalactites and stalagmites (but be aware that bats and rock doves call this place home). Numerous archeological excavations confirm that the cave was used as a place for worship since the early Minoan times. Objects found include an altar, bronze, iron, stone, clay and bone artifacts, semi-precious stones, and even human figurines – a rare discovery indeed. Some of the items are now on display at world-renowned institutions such as the Heraklion Museum, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Louvre, and the British Museum. After the visit, indulge in local delicacies such as kvass and yogurt ice cream at the nearby restaurant.
