Hidden under an indoor market is an ancient tunnel system filled with religious symbols etched into the living rock.
Hidden under Osimo’s covered market, the ancient Cantinone caves stretch for around 300 meters, and were likely the work of the Romans or Piceni, as suggested by the ancient wells. The visible marks of rudimentary digging tools show the galleries were widened during the Middle Ages, to provide local friars with a place to pray away from the noise of the city. The tunnel system can feel disorienting at times, which is as its makers intended - to dissuade and to disperse enemies in times of emergency! Fortunately the friendly tour guides can share a trick to stay on track. The low-reliefs etched into the cave walls are mostly religious, depicting allegorical and demonic figures, stylized representations of man and beast, as well as emblems and epigraphs. Please note the caves are closed on Mondays. We’d recommend scheduling your tour in advance at: http://www.osimoturismo.it/grotte-of-osimo/?lang=en
