Costa Rica
This rescue center rehabilitates wild cats and many other animals in large, natural enclosures.
The Centro de Rescate Las Pumas owes its foundation to Lilly Bodmer de Hagnauer, a Swiss immigrant with a passion for helping animals displaced or injured during Costa Rica’s peak era of deforestation. Beginning with concerned neighbors bringing her injured animals, eventually even the government turned to “Mrs. Lilly” for help, and within a few years, her backyard project had grown into a full-blown rescue center housing 160 animals. Today, the Centro de Rescate Las Pumas continues to honor Mrs. Lilly’s legacy, rehabilitating animals for release into the wild, and providing a safe home for those that cannot. Centro de Rescate Las Pumas is home to five of Costa Rica’s six wild cat species, offering a rare opportunity to see these elusive and elegant animals in a semi-natural environment. Along with the wild cats, the center is home to a variety of other animals ranging from spider monkeys to river otter, deer, parrots, and the badger-like grison.
