Cesky Sternberk

Currently owned by a descendent of the castle’s original founder, Český Šternberk is a classic example of a gothic bohemian castle.

About

Originally constructed in 1241, but with renovations taking place in both the 1400s and the 1600s, Český Šternberk is incredibly well preserved for its age. Notable for its riverside location and towering clifftop presence, the castle offers visitors an atmospheric and uniquely personal exanimation of European history. The fact that the castle has now returned to the original family, 20 generations later, provides a pleasing conclusion to the narrative of Český Šternberk and brings new meaning to the family’s heraldic motto ‘The star that never falls down’. Inside the castle, visitors can peruse fifteen rooms, furnished from different historical periods and view a rare collection of 545 copper engravings, depicting the entire history of the Thirty Years' War. The adjacent village (of the same name) grew up around the castle and is a nice example of a small Czech market town.
