A fifteenth-century Javanese-Hindu temple stands one of the last notable temple constructions in Java before the region’s conversion to Islam in the 16th century.
Cetho Temple sits on the western slope of Mount Lawu and is set apart from other Javanese temples, with its architectural design reminiscent of those found in the Mayan civilization of Mexico or the Incas in Peru. With 14 terraced patios that extend from west to east, the temple creates a captivating visual display and covers a vast area of hundreds of meters up the slope of Mount Lawu. Start at the large gateway, bearing resemblance to Balinese temple entrances, before being met with a spacious garden with two squat buildings and a temple. As you ascend the final set of stairs, you’ll encounter shrines emitting fragrant incense before a path will lead you past food stalls and eventually wind its way to the hilltop. A magnificent golden statue of a Hindu deity awaits, sitting magnificently atop Mount Lawu. The entrance fee to the temple is RP 30,000 and the site is open from 8AM to 5PM.
