Little has changed in the stupendous Jacobean manor over the centuries, giving visitors access to a lovingly lived-in time-capsule.
Chastleton House and Garden were constructed at the beginning of the 17th century by a wealthy wool merchant as a testament to his of wealth and power. The same family lived in the beautiful country home until 1991, and were involved in everything from the Gunpowder Plot to the invention of croquet. Almost no alterations have been made to the architecture or decor so visitors are treated to timeless look at life gone by. The manor’s rooms are full of historic objects like centuries-old tapestries, and stupendous wood panelling, as well as reminders of its owner’s continued use - from books on the nightstands to well-worn furniture and centuries of soot on the kitchen ceiling. The garden is equally impressive but informal, with a vegetable plot and Jacobean topiary, and in the Summer, croquet on the very grounds were game’s rules were invented.
