It’s said that this stunning estate was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty.
First built as a stronghold in the 11th century, the original fortress eventually fell into ruin. In the 15th century, Jean V de Bueil, a captain-general of Charles VII, purchased the site and began rebuilding. In the early 19th century secret meetings were held at the estate to plan the Bourbon Restoration. Today, the Marquis de Blacas lives in the castle, but has opened up its grounds and several stunning rooms to visitors. The best way to appreciate the many turrets and towers is a walk through the meticulously maintained French gardens, designed by Le Notre, who also designed the gardens at Versailles. Inside, visitors will find rooms decorated with impressive tapestries and elaborate trompe l'oeil paintings, where wax models are used to bring various historic periods to life in some rooms, and tell the story of Sleeping Beauty in others.
