France
This stark monument honors the American soldiers who fought and fell alongside their French comrades in World War I.
Designed by Paul Philippe Cret, the French-American architect responsible for several American war memorials. The stark and angular stripped Classicist style stands as a stark reminder to the fierce fighting that the US 2nd and 3rd Infantry Divisions took part in in the now idyllic Marne valley. On the eastern facade, a map details the American military operations and has an orientation table pointing out the significant battle sites. On the western facade, French-American artist Alfred Bottiau created a sculpture of two figures, representing the United States and France, to stand as a lasting symbol of the friendship and cooperation between the French and American Armies.
