Orbiting Tataouine, this ruined Berber village offers a fascinating look at how people adapted to living in the harsh desert.
Not to be confused with the modern village of the same name, Chenini is a historic Berber hilltop village that is now mostly ruined. A fortified granary dating back to the 12th century, the thick adobe walls and hilltop position helped protect people from raiders while also providing a safe space to store precious grain. Walking among the rock and rock and mud-brick houses, you’ll get a glimpse into a lifestyle that is totally alien to many, with some of the buildings still being used for grain storage by villagers living in the valley below. Between the village’s two ridges, a stark white mosque stands out like a beacon that is visible for miles amongst the rocky landscape. Despite note actually appearing in the Star Wars movies, hardcore fans will get a kick out of visiting one of Tatooine’s moons.
