Cherepish Monastery

Named for the bones of fallen soldiers found here, this beautiful sanctuary also exhibits bare bones in a cliff-side ossuary.

About

Cherepish Monastery was founded in the 14th-century, though repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt under Ottoman rule. In the 19th century, this charming riverside sanctuary was used as a hideout for rebels in the Russo-Turkish war. Today, the monastery is a harmonious marriage of natural and historic beauty. In the cliffs overlooking the monastery is an unusual 2 story ossuary, while the monastery itself is filled with 19th century frescoes, with some remnants dating back to the 16th century. In the monastery museum, visitors will find an amazing collection of historic icons made between the 16th and 19th centuries.
