Ruins are all that remain of the fortified hilltop town that was once one of the most important in medieval Bulgaria.
Beginning as a 6th century Byzantine fortress, the town of Cherven grow around the citadel, eventually developing into an internal fortified town on the hilltop and an external town situated at the foot of the hill. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, Cherven was one of the largest military and administrative, economic and religious centers in the Second Bulgarian Empire. In 1235 it even become a Bishop’s Residence. In 1388, the Turks conquered and demolished the town, leaving only the infrastructure necessary for administrative functions. So far, excavations have uncovered a castle, fortified walls, underground water-supplies, churches, and various other buildings, scattered with artefacts ranging from jewels to trade tools. Today visitors can walk among the foundations of the fortress, soaking in the spectacular panoramic views while picturing the ancient town that once stood here.
