Chiang Mai

Recently voted the best city in Asia, this ancient capital has retained its rich heritage and laid-back attitude.

About

Founded in 1296, Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom until the 18th century, and remained a princely seat until 1939. Today, it's the second largest city in Thailand, with the feel of a modern metropolis, but also firmly rooted in the past. The Old City is still contained within the original walled and moated boundaries, and home to over 30 Buddhist temples, some of which are as old as the city itself - Wat Chiang Man was where King Mengrai lived while the city was still being constructed. However, the city’s most famous landmark isn’t even in the city: Doi Suthep, is a mountain about 12 km away that’s crowned by the 13th century Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, offering travellers stupendous views and beautiful architecture. The other key Chiang Mai experience is its food, particularly khao soi.
