Thailand
One of Thailand’s oldest settlements, this provincial city boasts a laid-back atmosphere and some eye-opening attractions.
Founded by King Mangrai in 1262, Chiang Rai was actually under Burmese rule for several hundred years, and wasn’t annexed by Thailand until 1899. Chiang Rai’s central landmark is an elaborately decorated golden clock tower, designed by the artist behind the famous White Temple, that serves as a traffic roundabout. Nearby is the beautiful Wat Klang Wieng, which has a vivid red façade, and is covered with ornate grillwork, and gilded decorations. While you’re downtown, take some time to try Northern Thailand’s signature khao soi dish. Those with a taste for the macabre shouldn’t miss the Baan Dam Museum, otherwise known as the Black House, a complex of 40 buildings filled with intricately carved woodwork and the skulls, bones, and skins of countless animals. If you’re planning on heading into the mountains to visit the hill-tribes, be sure to stop by the Hill-Tribes Museum and Education Centre to learn about their culture.
