Mexico
From some of the oldest vestiges of Mesoamerican culture to charming Spanish architecture, this Pueblo Magico harmoniously combines indigenous and colonial heritage.
Chiapa de Corzo was the first settlement founded by the Spanish in Chiapas, though the area had been settled since at least 1400 BC. According to local lore, when Diego de Mazariegos invaded the area in 1528, the native Chiapa hurled themselves to their death in the nearby canyon rather than surrender. Today, it's a quiet town where colonial architecture and indigenous culture harmoniously coexist. In the arcade-lined main plaza, where you’ll find the 16th century, Moorish-style La Pila fountain, and the nearby Temple and Ex Convent of Santo Domingo is a beautiful blend of Moorish Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical styles. The Lacquer Museum inside offers a look at the area’s most important craft. You can also get a glimpse of the ancient indigenous capital at the small archaeological site, where the oldest tomb and oldest writing example in Mesoamerica were found. If you’re not sure when to visit, shoot for the 4th to 23rd of January when they hold the UNESCO-listed Great January Feast!
