Peru
Colonial architecture and indigenous culture go hand-in-hand in “The City of Friendship”.
The city of Chiclayo is a fascinating combination of cultures; the fourth largest city in the country as well as the commercial and financial capital of Northern Peru, it sits at the confluence of ancient civilizations and modern post-colonial values. Visitors can browse the bustling Mercado Central and Mercado Modelo (the latter of which contains in a famed “witch market,” where shoppers can peruse a selection of occult and spell-casting props). History buffs will appreciate the Republican-era architecture of the Municipal Palace and the Cathedral of Chiclayo, both located near the city’s main park. Be sure to bring a hat or sunscreen, as shade is hard to find in this ever-sunny desert landscape!
