Croatia
Situated overlooking one of Croatia’s most scenic and historically-significant landscapes, this modern church offers a unique experience.
In 2003, the rough stone base that would be used for the church’s future altar was blessed by Pope John Paul II, and the church held its first service in 2010. The church stands as a testament to the turbulent history of the country, in particular the Battle of Krbava when the Kingdom of Croatia forces fought the advance of the Ottoman in 1493, with tragic consequences. The church offers a breathtaking view over the legendary Krbava field and surrounding mountains, and is a stunning example of Croatian architecture. Above the main entrance of the church, one can see the inscription Martiribus croatorum – Hrvatskim mučenicima (To Croatian Martyrs), and the years 879—the first international recognition of Croatia—and 2010, the year the church was opened. The Church of Croatian Martyrs at Udbina is unlike no other, and is well worth a stop during your travels through the area.
