Shape your own opinion on the atypical arches of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dalcahue church was built in 1858 towards the tail end of a conversion effort dating back to the start of the 17th century. Like the 70 other colonial churches constructed on the Chiloé archipelago, the church of Dalcahue employed locals in its construction and used traditional materials and building techniques. The sides are shingled in Patagonian cypress, while the facade is whitewashed planks. But what sets Dalcahue apart from the other UNESCO listed churches in Chiloé are the mismatched arches on the portico. The interior is reminiscent of a fishing boat, with its seafoam green arched ceiling. The only real ornamentation comes from the carved wood altar and its polychromed Jesus.
