The medieval painted ceiling in this serene alpine church is the only one in the world in such a perfectly preserved condition.
First mentioned in 831, coins have been found that prove it dates back to the Roman Empire. Surrounded by soaring peaks, it’s hard not to look up, which prepares visitors for what awaits inside the church. The 153 painted ceiling panels were made around 1100, and are still crisp and vibrant almost 1000 years later, and depict everything from mythical creatures to the life of Christ. The church museum houses a recreation of a medieval painter’s workshop, as well as details on how the picture panels were created.
