Israel
This mountaintop church marks the site where God recognized Jesus as his son.
Built in 1924, the Church of the Transfiguration stands atop the ruins of a Byzantine church dating back to the 4th century. The site has been a place of reverence since the dawn of Christianity, because it was here that Jesus was transfigured, became radiant, spoke with Moses and Elijah, and was called "Son" by God. This event elevated Jesus to a position above Moses and Elijah, Judaism’s two preeminent figures. Designed by Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi, the church runs with the radiant theme - the golden mosaic depicting the transfiguration is illuminated by a glass plate on August 6 (the "day of the Transfiguration"), and the roof was made from semi-translucent alabaster panels, though these had to be covered with conventional materials as they were not watertight. Walking the church grounds, you can gaze out over medieval foundations for uninterrupted views of the plain of Jezreel - “the breadbasket of Israel”. Please note: the church is usually closed from 12:00-2:00 PM.
