France
With two historic centers, visitors can choose how they want to enjoy this ancient city’s past - walking well-preserved streets, or seeing key monuments.
One of the oldest settlements in France, the Gaulish leader who would unite the tribes against the Romans was born nearby. Throughout its long history, the city remained prominent, serving as the base of the First Crusade, and becoming property of the Crown in the 17th century. Today the city has two distinct historic centers: Clermont with the key monuments, Montferrand, which is one of the country’s best preserved towns, and perfect for strolling. The city is home to two monumental churches, both of which are worth visiting. The imposing Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Gothic cathedral, made of black lava stone still has its original stained-glass windows. The Romanesque Notre-Dame-du-Port basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is equally striking, with a exquisitely carved choir, and a crypt with a Black Virgin. In the heart of the city’s shopping district, the immense Place de Jaude square a lively space centered around an equestrian statue of Vercingétorix.
