Bolivia
Enjoy great views, beautiful architecture, delicious food, and a giant Christ statue in this temperate valley.
Sprawled across a fertile valley, Cochabamba was founded by the Spanish as an agricultural center in the 16th century, and to this day, is known as “the granary of Bolivia”. Every visit should include a cable car up to Cochabamba’s proudest landmark - the giant Cristo statue (which locals will proudly tell you is 44cm taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer). As with most other cities in South America, the heart of Cochabamba is the airy plaza. Admire the elegant cathedral before heading to the Convento de Santa Teresa for a tour, which includes a great view from its roof. There are also some worthwhile museums, like the Museo Archeologico, and the lavish Palacio Portales, the grandiose former home of a tin baron. For something more down to earth, join one of the two-hour street art bicycle tours. And, of course, being the country’s major food producer, Cochabamba is a great place to eat - head to the market on Calle 25 de Mayo and gorge on local fare alongside hordes of hungry locals.
