Paraguay
With dirt streets, Colonial buildings, and laid-back locals, this riverside village offers a break from the pressures of modern life.
Founded in 1773, the little town of Concepcion hasn’t changed much over the centuries. It’s dirt streets are still lined with Colonial-era buildings, and you’ll still see horse-drawn carts rolling behind scooters often overladen with multiple riders. At the heart of the main street is a towering statue of Maria Auxiliadora, which has a small viewing platform at its base. From here you walk towards the river and stop by the Museo Municipal del Cuartel de la Villa Real. Housed in a 19th century barracks, this small museum exhibits Triple Alliance War relics as well as indigenous artefacts. While you’re walking around town, you’ll probably notice the locals’ exceptionally laid-back and sociable nature, so if you want a real taste of Concepcion life, stop by a cafe, order a terere (an iced mate drink), and relax.
