Constantine

Lose yourself in the civilization-spanning history of one of the world’s oldest cities.

About

On par with Athens or Rome, Constantine proudly bears the title of one of the world’s oldest cities. In fact Constantine is so old that its true origins are lost in time. While it was probably founded by the Phoenicians, it was definitely the ancient Numidian capital before being ruled by the Romans, Ottomans, and French - a true crossroads of civilizations. Proudly sitting on top of a hill and surrounded by water, the city’s geographical position required a bounty of bridges, which erected its nickname "City of Bridges". The spans are some of the city's most iconic sights, so don't miss the stunning view from the Suspended Bridge, the ancient El Kantara Bridge, or the remarkable stone-arched Sidi Rached Bridge with a view over the Rhumel River. But Constantine’s most impressive landmark is Emir Abdelkader mosque. You don’t have to worry about missing it, because the mosque is among the largest ones on the continent, and visible from anywhere in the city! If that's not impressive enough, head to the Palace of Ahmed Dey, one of the finest Ottoman-era buildings in Algeria. Here you’ll find lavish, marble-laden interiors and courtyards, and a lush garden with olive and orange trees, one of which was planted by Napoleon.
