The little coastal town of Conwy is still guarded by its imposing UNESCO-listed castle and medieval town wall.
In the 13th century, Edward I built a series of imposing castles in Northern Wales to cement his authority in the region. Along with the formidable fortification, Edward also had the English colony of Conwy surrounded by a defensive wall. Abandoned in the 17th century, the castle fell into ruin, though its attracted atmosphere attracted artists. Today, visitors can scale the castle’s towers to for stunning views of the quaint historic center of Conwy and its town wall, explore the inner and outer wards with their many rooms, and roam the ramparts of the wall and its 21 towers that still guard the town. While in Conwy visitors can also enjoy some traditional Welsh cuisine, and see the smallest house in Britain, which is only 3.05m x 1.83m.
