Founded by Earl Leofric and his wife Lady Godiva as a Benedictine monastery, Coventry quickly grew into one of England’s largest and most important medieval cities. By the 18th century, it was a center for manufacturing, starting with watches, then shifting gears to bicycles, cars, and planes. Today, Coventry’s rich heritage is preserved through a variety of museums and monuments. The remains of the city’s 14th century Cathedral with its 90 meter spire stand next to its modern replacement, which is considered one of the finest 20th century structures in the country. Next door, the 14th century St. Mary’s Guildhall was where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. At the Coventry Transport Museum you can see its automotive legacy first hand.
