Ireland
Many of striking formations in this show cave are named after locations or characters from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien.
While the Geological Survey of Ireland determined there was a cave in the area in 1859, Crag Cave wasn’t discovered until the 1980s. Originally requiring scuba gear to access, Crag Cave was made accessible to the public in 1989 when a shaft, pathways, railings, lights, and a music system were added. Extending for 3.8km, Crag Cave is the 10th longest cave system in the whole of Ireland, with about 350 meters open to visitors as a show cave. On a half hour guided tour, visitors are led through a variety of chambers with names like “the Cathedral” and “the Crystal Gallery”, each of which is filled with beautiful formations.
