About

The Cristo Rei (Christ the King) statue, also known as the Sacred Heart statue, is a remarkable Art Deco representation of Jesus Christ located in Garajau, Madeira. Erected in 1927, this monument serves as a commemoration of non-Christians who tragically met their end off the cliff due to religious restrictions on burials that persisted until the late 18th century. Considered one of the most emblematic landmarks on the island's east coast, the Christ the King statue is set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, the expansive ocean, and a panoramic view of part of Funchal Bay. Fun fact: this statue was completed four years prior to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. Just a short distance from the statue, a cable car offers visitors a leisurely descent to Garajau Beach. This serene location, known for its calm waters and abundant marine life, is an ideal spot for scuba diving. The beach is well-equipped with facilities such as a changing area, restrooms, a first aid station, and a restaurant to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable visit.
