Mexico
This small city is a lesser-visited Mexican gem, veiled in great historical and cultural significance for its role in the War of Independence.
At the heart of Cuautla is the Zocalo, the city's main square, where a bust of José María Morelos remembers the local hero's prominent role in the Mexican War of Independence. The nearby Ex Convento de San Diego, built in the 16th century by the Dominicans, played an important role in the defense of Cuautla during the war. The Morelos House Museum tells the story of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain, and honors the rebel leader who led the movement. This history is particularly pertinent in Cuautla as it was designated a ‘Heroic City’ for its efforts in the war. The museum has several rooms displaying archaeological and historical artefacts which give a great insight into this culturally significant time. Next to the museum visitors can take the opportunity to ride a historic steam train - the world's oldest! - which was once used to transport agricultural produce. If all this history puts an ache in your bones, you can have a soak in one of the many nearby hot spring resorts.
