Dominican Republic
Take a dip in a cave filled with Taino carvings.
The Cueva de Chicho offers one of the most unique swimming opportunities in the Dominican Republic. Follow the well-marked hiking trail (you’ll want proper hiking shoes) to the mouth of the partially collapsed cavern, and follow the passageway into the depths of the cave and the cool underground pool within. The cave hasn’t been developed, so you’ll need a flashlight to see where you’re going, and to see the petroglyphs carved by the Taino Indians hundreds of years ago. If you need to stretch your legs, you can also hike along the 1.25-mile Padre Nuestro trail, where informative signs explain both the park’s ecology and archaeological history. Entry to the park is 200 pesos.
