With a prehistoric fossilized forest, and endangered penguins and dolphins, this dramatic stretch of coast is a fascinating spectacle.
Millions of years ago, Curio Bay was a dense, subtropical forest on the eastern edge of the ancient super-continent Gondwanalan. Shifting tectonics and volcanic eruptions left the forest buried at the edge of the sea. Thanks to erosion, at low tide it’s now possible to see the fossilized remains of this 180-million-year-old forest - one of only three accessible fossil forests of its kind in the world. The rocky coast is also home to a colony of Yellowed Eyed Penguins - the world’s rarest penguin species, while the waters just offshore host a pod of endangered Hector's Dolphins. After admiring this amazing landscape and its rare wildlife, you can head to the nearby Porpoise Bay to swim or relax on the beautiful sandy beach. But remember, it’s strictly prohibited to take or leave anything at Curio Bay.
