Romania
This series of ruined fortresses once guarded the capital of the might Dacian kingdom, and offer some unique architectural insights amongst a beautiful backdrop.
Built between the 1st centuries B.C. and A.D, the series of Dacian fortresses in the Orastie Mountains formed a defensive ring around the Dacian capital of Sarmizegetusa. While they proved a formidable opponent to the invading Romans, they eventually succumbed, and much of their infrastructure was destroyed. Even today, the remains show an unusual combination of military and religious architectural techniques from the classical world. Among the defensive works, and foundations of such structures as temples and sacrifice stones, are clues of an advanced civilization, such as ceramic plumbing and paved roads. For nature lovers, the surrounding National park is the oldest in Romania and listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation, and provides a memorable hiking experience.
