Switzerland
The highest town in Europe is full of superlatives, like Europe’s largest natural ice-skating rink, and highest brewery.
During the mid-19th century, the town’s micro-climate made it a popular destination for the sick and ailing, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, who suffered from tuberculosis. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also lived here for a while with his sick wife, and wrote an article about skiing on Davos’ famous mountain. Today, the town has maintained the natural charms that have made it a destination for so long. In the summer, a funicular brings visitors to the Alpine Botanical Gardens, is home to around 800 different species of plant from all over the world, wonderful views, and even a waterfall. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, spent the final years of his life here, and the museum dedicated to the artist houses the largest collection of his works in the world.
