South Africa
This historic, family-run winery is South Africa's most prestigious Chardonnay producer.
The De Wetshof Estate is one of the oldest wineries in South Africa, with a heritage dating back to 1694. Legend has it, the family’s ancestor immigrated to South Africa from Burgundy with some Chardonnay grapes stashed in his pocket, and the family has been involved with wine ever since. Today, the De Wetshof Estate is South Africa’s premier producer of Chardonnay, receiving the prestigious 1659 Honorary Award for its profound impact on the South African wine industry. The charming white buildings, surrounded by rose bushes and jacaranda trees, a representations of the winery’s history. The cellar building is even styled after Cape Town’s First Customs House, while the tasting room is modelled after the 18th century De Wet House in Cape Town. Visitors can enjoy an informative tasting of the vineyard’s famed wines, and for even more insight into the winery, a tour of the cellar can be arranged in advance.
