Europe’s most powerful waterfall was featured as part of the primordial planet in the movie Prometheus.
At 100 meters wide and 44 metres tall, Dettifoss Waterfall sees nearly 200 cubic meters of water pour over its edge every second. Dettifoss earned the title of ‘Europe’s most powerful waterfall’ by a simple computation: waterflow times fall height. The unbridled power and raw natural beauty of Dettifoss attracted Ridley Scott, who used it as part of the landscape in Prometheus. Plummeting into a rocky canyon, the falls produce a near-constant mist - perfect fodder for rainbows on sunny days. There are two access roads to the falls - the west bank is a paved road and easy walking trail which will put you in the midst of the falls’ mist. The east bank is reached via a slightly more rugged road but is drier and gives you a viewing platform.
