Iceland
These imposing lava formations became world-famous after being featured in Game of Thrones as Mance Rayder’s wildling camp.
The Dimmuborgir Lava Formations were created by a massive eruption around 2300 years ago. As a 10-meter-deep lake of lava moved across the wet marshland, the rising steam formed lava pillars. The lava’s movement eventually made the upper crust collapse, leaving behind this tubes and pillars. Looking like a collapsed citadel, Dimmuborgir literally means ‘Dark Castle’ in Icelandic, and according to Nordic Christian lore, this where Satan landed when he was cast from heaven. Those with a keen eye will also recognize the formations from Game of Thrones, where they farmed part of the wildling camp of Hardhome. Exploring these beautiful formations, you might stumble across the home of Iceland’s ‘Yule Lads’ - mischievous trolls that usher in the Yule Tide. Dimmuborgir is just one part of the Lake Mývatn area, where you can also find Jon and Ygritte’s love-cave, or enjoy a nice thermal bath.
