Dol Cathedral

Rooted in the very foundation of Christianity in Brittany, this unusual cathedral gives visitors an insightful look at medieval construction techniques.

About

Established in the 5th century by Celts from Cornwall, Dol Cathedral was the seat of one of Brittany’s 7 original bishoprics. In the 13th century, King John of England set the Romanesque Cathedral ablaze, so the grand Gothic structure seen today was built in its place. Today, the Cathedral’s facade is a singular mix of architectural styles, with a 13th century Romanesque porch, 15th century Gothic porch, and striking main facade, which was worked on until the 19th century. It’s said the incomplete 16th century North Tower had its top knocked off after the Devil through the nearby Dol menhir at the building, through the reality is the project simply ran out of funds. Inside, visitors will find stunning stained glass windows, expert woodwork, and the tomb of a 15th century bishop. Across the street, the Cathedraloscope, which explains the techniques used to make these medieval monuments. For more information, please visit http://cathedraloscope.com/
