Germany
The mighty Danube, which flows through 10 countries on its way to the Black Sea, stems from this spring.
While the Danube officially starts at the confluence of the Breg and the Brigach streams, its source-water is another story. Since the days of the Roman Empire, the Donauquelle has been considered the true source of the Europe’s most significant river, and officially received the title from the German government in 1981. In 1895, Adolf Heer created an allegorical fountain around the spring depicting Germany’s central plateau, as a mother showing her daughter, the Danube, the way out into the world.
