South Korea
Discover ancient grandeur at the largest burial ground of South Korea's Joseon Dynasty rulers.
The Donggureung Royal Tombs Cluster is the final resting place of seven kings and ten queens, spanning over five centuries. Each tomb, known as "neung," is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, meticulously designed to pay tribute to the departed royalty. Guarding the tombs are stone statues called "seokjangseung," while intricately carved animal figures known as "seokinsang" are believed to assist the spirits of the royals in the afterlife. Contemplate the tombs and figures as you stroll through lush forest trails and a peaceful ambiance. As you move between the graves, casual walking trails allow you to immerse yourself in 600 years of Joseon history. The site is open February to May and September to October from 6AM to 6PM, June to August from 6AM to 6:30PM, and November to January from 6:30 to 5:30PM. Entry fees range from 800 to 1,000 WON.
