Home to the world's largest topiary park, this charming stone village was once the world's smallest city thanks to a medieval title.
Durbuy was an important medieval trade center, and was elevated to the rank of city by King John I Count of Luxemburg, and King of Bohemia, in 1331. At the time, the honor made it (supposedly) the smallest city in the world, with only a few hundred residents. Today, Durbuy still celebrates this status, and even though it can no longer officially claim the title. Regardless of how you classify it, the cobbled streets and stone buildings are undeniably an all-too-charming place to lose yourself, take in views of the 18th century castle from every angle, and pop into a cafe. If you get stone-sick, Durbuy has another claim to fame: the world’s largest topiary park. Covering an entire hectare, you’ll find green hedges shaped into over 250 different designs including humans and animals.
