Echo Caves

The stalactites in one of the world’s oldest cave systems were used as a warning system in the 19th century.

About

The Echo Caves were discovered in the 1920s by a farmer investigating why his cattle were disappearing. Dating back millions of years, the caves are some of the oldest in the world and are recognized as a historical monument. Up into the 1800s, the Pedi people lived in what’s now known as the Samson Chamber. They used the hollow stalactites as a warning system, hence the cave’s name. On a 45 minute guided tour, you’ll learn about the cave’s history, and be treated to some beautiful formations. Dedicated spelunkers can organize a special tour to wiggle deeper into the cave, but this is not for people claustrophobia. Please note: the caves are not recommended for people with mobility problems.
