New Zealand
From convict carrier to booze cruise, one of the worlds oldest ships has had quite the checkered past that is all laid out on display
First launched in 1853, the Edwin Fox was quickly enlisted into the Crimean War, where it is reputed that it carried the famed nurse Florence Nightingale. After the ship’s stint in the navy it became a passenger carrier, and is actually the last remaining ship that brought convicts to Australia when it was still a British penal colony. Later on in its history it brought alcohol to India and immigrants to New Zealand. Come learn about its various adventures and it’s exciting history in a museum dedicated to it and to sailing in centuries past. The museum houses a large collection of displays that speak to a fascinating past on the sea. Perhaps the most fascinating part of the museum is the ship itself, moored at the dry dock next door which can be walked upon and explored to really take in an authentic 19th century experience.
