Eklingji Temple

Constructed in 734 A.D. by Bappa Rawal, this temple holds immense historical and religious significance, serving as the ruling deity of the Mewar royal dynasty.

About

Situated in the town of Eklingji (Kailashpuri), the Eklingji Temple is an architectural marvel and a revered site dedicated to Lord Shiva in Rajasthan. The Udaipur Maharanas consider themselves the representatives of Lord Eklingji, emphasizing the deity's role as the guardian and virtual ruler of Mewar. Legend has it that Shri Eklingji has been present since Satyuga, and even celestial beings like Indra and Kamdhenu have worshipped at this sacred site. Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty, built the temple after a divine vision of the deity during challenging times. The temple's architectural grandeur is evident in its pyramidal roofs adorned with intricate carvings, and the main temple features a massive pillared hall with a silver Nandi. The sanctum sanctorum houses a four-faced black marble idol representing different deities in each direction. Ornate silver doors, depicting Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya, add to the temple's opulence. While Eklingji Temple is not open to the public, it remains a focal point of religious devotion for the Maharanas. Daily rituals are performed by appointed priests, who declare their actions in the name of the Maharana. The temple complex includes additional shrines, tanks, and idols made of sacred metals.
