This hilltop fortress has been used by everyone from dictators to the Boy Scouts.
El Coyotepe Fortress was built in 1893 on a hilltop to allow troops to keep an eye on American troops and defend nearby Masaya. During the dictatorial regimes that dominated the 20th century, the fortress was used as a prison for political enemies, many of whom were tortured and kept in lightless dungeon cells. The fort was eventually given to the Boy Scouts and now hosts their annual jamboree. They’ve also opened it to visitors, welcoming them to learn more about the site’s history, explore the dark dungeon cells, and soak in the panoramic views offered from its hilltop position.
