El Tajin Archeological Zone

With architecture found nowhere else in Mesoamerica, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an awe-inspiring archaeological enigma.

About

After the fall of Teotihuacan, El Tajin emerged as the dominant trade center of Mesoamerica, exporting everything from obsidian to corn, cacao, and vanilla (the last of which they may have been the first to cultivate). The city enjoyed some 600 years of growth, reaching an estimated 20,000 people at its peak. But in the 13th century, it attracted the attention of (probably) the Aztecs, who raided the city and forced its people into subjugation. While archaeologists have managed to piece together an overview of the city's history, they haven't figured out exactly who built it. The root of the mystery is the unusual art and architecture, which is unique in all of Mesoamerica. Just look at the iconic Pyramid of the Niches, where 365 niches line the 7 stepped terraces, and the intricate stone mosaics and murals found in the palaces at El Tajín Chico. Stop by the ruins in March where you can experience the Cumbre Tajin Festival, which is a cultural nod to the indigenous and local culture, as well as lots of music from around the country.
