Unwind in this sleepy former mining town that was once the largest city in Baja.
El Triunfo was once the largest city in Baja, with over 10,000 miners taking up residence here in the 19th century in search of gold and silver. But today, El Triunfo’s population has dwindled to under 400 people. This combination of thriving past and sleepy present has left the town with a laid back atmosphere, but enough cultural attractions to keep busy. Most famous is the old mining grounds, where you’ll find old equipment, ruins, and the iconic La Romana smokestack, which is said to have been designed by Gustave Eiffel. If nature’s your thing, there’s also a 50-hectare cactus sanctuary just outside of town where you can wander among endemic plants. To learn more about the mine and the region, stop by the interactive Museo Ruta de Plata. An interesting reminder of El Triunfo’s rich past is the Music Museum, which is filled with pianos and other instruments from all over the world that were brought here during its heyday.
