Portugal
The premier frontier fortress south of the Tagus, Elvas is a town literally built for battle.
Built as the first line of defense on the Spanish border, Elvas spent centuries defending Portugal’s independence. The advanced defensive system successfully withstood sieges by the Spanish in 1659, 1711 and 1801, only falling to the French in 1808. Today, the city’s mixture of Islamic and Medieval walls, ring of walls from the 17th century, plus forts built up through the 19th century are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Before even entering the town, visitors are greeted by the 17th century Aqueduct, with its 843 arches. Once you breach the perimeter walls, the city’s cobbled streets offer a bounty of sights, including the Moorish medieval castle, scenic Square of Santa Clara, and squat cathedral.
