Hungary
Esztergom sits on the bank of the River Danube on the border with Slovakia and is the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary
Visitors approaching from the direction of the Danube are greeted with the sight of the spectacular Esztergom Basilica rising high above the town from the hilltop overlooking the city. The vision of the reflection of the Basilica in the waters of the Danube is an experience that visitors never forget as they approach the largest church in Hungary and the third largest in Europe. The colossal dome measures over 230 feet high and can be seen from miles around. The interior is no less impressive, housing the richest ecclesiastical collection in Hungary and the red and white marble Bakócz Chapel with its Italian Renaissance stone-carving and sculptures. For the more venturesome, the 400 stone steps leading up to the cupola at the top of the building are well worth the climb to check out the dazzling views over a city steeped in history with its baroque churches, medieval fortresses, city walls and Turkish bastions from bygone eras
