United States
Arguably the most iconic private home in America, this UNESCO World Heritage Site embodies Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture.
Fallingwater was built by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s as a weekend home for department store owners Liliane and Edgar J. Kaufmann. After finding the waterfall tucked away in the forests of Pennsylvania, Wright devised a way to incorporate the cascade into a whimsical home. Built from concrete and natural materials, the house has perhaps the best execution of Wright’s signature cantilevered design elements, with the living room (floored with stone from the property) and pergolas flying out over the stream - and a hanging stairwell leading down to the water. Oh, and there’s a tree inside the house! Wright also designed the interior furnishings, from the hand-carved dining set to the book selves incorporated into the stone walls. There’s a reason the house was featured in the MoMA and ranked among the list of America’s favorite buildings.
