Falun

Characteristic wooden houses dot this UNESCO World Heritage Site listed Swedish village steeped in rich mining history.

About

The capital of the ancient medieval Swedish Kingdom of Dalarna County, Falun fits scenically into beautiful valleys and lakes, boasting one of the most significant copper mines in Europe and significant cultural exports. The gorgeous river Faluån flows through the city, with the “mining side” included in the city’s World Heritage listing - notable for once producing 70% of all copper in the Western world. You can spend hours exploring the site and learning about the legends of the mine’s history, or walk the 1.6km-long trail around the Great Pit. On the other side of the river, the “delightful side” awaits, lined with classical pedestrian streets and small shops selling the world famous Falun sausage “Falukorv”. Coated on the wooden houses and bars throughout the town is a deep rust red paint known as “Falu red”, created in the town from the iron-rich materials of the mine. It’s become an iconic color throughout Sweden and originates right from this charming city.
